Have you ever been out camping or hiking? Yes you have, you look like the hiking and camping type. Well in your experiences out in the wilderness you mave have had a time where you drank water from a stream or a pump. how did you feel later on? You may have come down with “beaver fever”…

Commonly called beaver fever, “Giardiasis“, is a disease contracted from contaminated food or water, generally in the wilderness or 3rd world countries, or a daycare, as it can be passed on by personal contact. Giardiasis infects somewhere in the vicinity of 200 million people worldwide, and is transferable between animals and humans.

If you do come down with giardiasis, these are some of the symptoms that you may have to endure:
– Diarrhea
– Stomach cramps
– Loss of appetite
– Lethargy
– Upset Stomach
– Bloating
– Flatulence

These symptoms generally start a fortnight (2 weeks) after infection occurs. A common problem with the condition is that generally, symptoms can go away, and then reappear in a cycle. This makes it difficult to determine whether or not you are still contagious.

However, only about a third of the infected will show symptoms, thus making spread easier. The body is able to defeat the infection on its own, but antibiodics can always help.
Antibiodics for adults: metronidazole, albenzazole and quinacrine.
Antibiodics for children: Furazolidone and nitazoxanide.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that are characterized by pressure that is too high for the optic nerve to withstand. The optic nerve is crucial in sight, as it is the nerve that sends all of the images created by the eye to the brain. Given it’s cruciality, damage to the nerve from glaucoma results first the loss of peripheral vision, and then central vision.

Glaucoma can be treated in many different fashions with medication and often times surgery is required to stop it from completely damaging the optic nerve.

Glaucoma develops at a different rate for every individual, meaning that one individual might experience nerve damage from a relatively low amount of pressure, while another individual might have noticeably higher pressure and yet be able to withstand it for years without developing any damage.

There is several different types of glaucoma with the most commong type being: primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). POAG is dubbed the “the sneak thief of sight” because it typically has no symptoms. Another type of glaucoma is acute angle-closure glaucoma, which is commonly characterized by an acute rise in the intraocular pressure. Acute angle-closure glaucoma occurs in eyes that are vulernible as the pupil dilates, thus blocking the flow of fluid through it. Acute angle-closure glaucoma will generally cause pain and blurred vision, and in more extreme cases leads to irreversible visual loss within a short time. In such cases immediate treatment is required.

Some symptoms of the disease are: halos around bright lights as well as the loss of sight(slowly or rapidly). If you suspect that you or someone you know is affected with glaucoma it is extremely important to have it checked out by an eye doctor immediately because untreated glaucoma can result in total loss of sight.

A cataract is “any opacity which develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope”. Cataracts develop for a variety of reasons, with the most common factor being the long-term exposure to ultraviolet light. Cataracts can also develop from advanced age or secondary effects of diseases such as diabetes.

Usually a result of denaturation (the conversion of DNA from the double-stranded to the single-stranded state; separation of the strands is most often accomplished by heating) of lens proteins, there is several genetic factors which are also known to play a major role predisposing an individual to cataracts. As mentioned above with advancing age the prevalence of cataracts becomes more dominant. Cataract formation is expected in any individual over the age of 70 (50% of all people between the ages of 65 and 74 & approximately 70% of those over 75).

Although not as commong, cataracts can be produced as a result of an eye injury or other physical trauma. A recent study of Icelandair pilots, proved that commercial airline pilots are three times as likely to develop cataracts as people with non-flying jobs. This increase in odds isn’t completely known yet, but is thought to be caused by radiation coming from outer space. Cataracts is most commonly aided via surgery called cataract surgery. The surgery aims to restore the eye back to it’s original state by removing any cataracts that are present.

We’re only given one set of two eyes. Taking care of them is extremely important. This can mean simple precautions such as wearing sunglasses to prevent our eyes from elements such as ultraviolet light, wind, and from getting particles in the eye that can damage or lenses.

Being A Celiac Can Be An advantage

Sufferers of Celiac Disease have to maintain a strict gluten- free diet. That means a huge change in life style. This requires some thought and discipline.

This can leave you with a feeling of isolation and loss. This article offers 5 positive steps you can take when eating out at resaurants.

Having a positive attitude to life in general and dealing with Celiac Disease in particular can have a huge impact on the quality of your life and those around you.

It is very easy to focus on the difficulties of keeping to a gluten free diet, particularly when eating out. However you can also discover that being on a special diet can have huge advantages.

I was on a recent business trip staying away from home, working as a facilitator/ trainer. Delegates were asked to choose lunch and dinner from a rather restricted menu.

I on the other hand was invited to choose from the A la Carte menu.

At the first lunch time there was no suitable desert. I spoke to the waiter and asked that there should be something more exciting than fresh fruit for the evening meal. From then on every meal a “creation?each more interesting than the last appeared amid oohs and ahhs from the assembled company. As they were of gigantic proportions my table were happy to share in my gastronomic delight.

I accept you have to wrestle with the issue of being ‘different?but at times it is rather nice to find that the difference leads to an enjoyable difference rather than watching everyone else tuck into something scrummy whilst I get the boring option.

There are a few principles to ensure you get good service from a restaurant:

Talk to the staff and make yourself known when you arrive

Smile and engage rather than demand

Explain what you are able to eat and what to avoid

If things go wrong (and they will!) explain politely that what has been served will make you very ill. Ask them to completely replace with something safe rather than take the offending item off the rest. An example of this happened last week when a selection of sorbets came up with a biscuit. A quiet word with the waiter meant it was whisked away and a completely new sundae appeared very quickly.

Always thank people for their help. It will make them much more likely to go that extra mile for you if you return and for the next celiac who walks through the door

Myasthenia Gravis – “is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating weakness and fatiguability.” Myasthenia Gravis is a latin term meaning “grave muscle weekness”. This disease is famous as an autoimmune disorder. Being so widely known, doctors have researched and found out many of the disease mechanisms and symptoms.

In almost all cases, the diagnosed will suffer from massive muscle fatigue when participating in any sort of physical activity. When at rest, however, this symptom will not be evident. Myasthenia Gravis does not favour any particular muscle to fatigue. In fact it has been known to happen to muscles that chew, control eyelid and eye movement, talk, control facial expressions, swallowing, and even sometimes the muscles that control limb and neck movement, as well as breathing. Most people at least suffer from muscle fatigue when swallowing, making facial expressions, and moving their eyes and eyelids.

This particular disease is somewhat difficult to diagnose. The symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis are alike many other nuerological disorders, and even normal occurences. If all symptoms of Myasthenia are present then it is clear, but if not, even testing can be very inaccurate. Testing for this disorder is restricted to the eye muscles, and is only 50% accurate, at best.

Luckily, if the symptoms are minor, and the disease is not able to be diagnosed, it really isnt to bad. Muscle fatigue is something that people have to live with if they are simply regular gym-goers. If the symptoms are fierce, and the disease is diagnosed, then treatment can begin immediatly.

One family’s experience with childhood cancer

Childhood Cancer

Raising a healthy and happy family was the most important objective in our lives. We seemed to be succeeding with four daughters between the ages of eight and twelve. Live was good.

Then without warning our oldest daughter, Alisa developed some symptoms that, at first, seemed minor. But as the days passed and she didn’t respond to the antibiotics, we knew we were looking at a serious health problem. Little did we know that we would hear the words, “Your daughter has cancer!?From that moment on our lives changed forever. Our daughter had Hodgkin’s Disease.

Alisa was sent to Boston to get the best care. It was a daunting task trying to keep the family going. Everyone was feeling the effects of Alisa’s illness.. Once your family starts this journey, there is no turning back. It is a roller coaster ride at it’s worst. Alisa was challenged physically and the other children were challenged emotionally. We tried our best to maintain normalcy.

No Guarantees, an ebook tells the story of our experience with childhood cancer. It is my wish that our story will help many other families. I know when Alisa was diagnosed that I searched everywhere to find books or stories about other children. It was almost impossible to find these stories and when I did, usually the child died after a short fight against the disease.

Tics are involuntary, rapid, sudden movements or vocalizations that occur repeatedly in the same way. Symptoms to Tourette’s include multiple motor and often times several vocal tics present at some time during the disorder. These various tics are not nessecarry to occur simultaneously.

The occurrence of tics throughout the day usually occur is spasms. These spasms occur nearly every day or intermittently throughout a span of more than one year. The syndrome will change in the quantity, frequency, type and location of the affecting tics.

Vocal tics can be subdivided into various categories, including:
– Repetition of words after reading them
– Spontaneous utterance of socially questionable words (Usually Racial and ethnic)
– Repetition of one’s own previously spoken words
– Repetition of words spoken by someone else after being heard by the person with the disorder

Besides the vocal tics mentioned above, there are many other categories which don’t always involved word repetition. Tourette Syndrome vocal tics don’t even have to be words, they can be represented by almost any possible short vocal sound. The most common of these types of tics are sounds produced that resemble throat clearing, short coughs, grunts, or moans.

Motor tics can be a numberless variety of actions which can include:
– Contorted facial grimacing.
– Knuckles banging together
– Itching
– hand-clapping
– Scratching

Tourettes Syndrome is indicated when a person exhibits both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics over the period of 1 year, with no more than three months of consecutive living tic-free. These Tic disturbances can easily impair and or distress the individual from functioning normally. The diagnosis cannot be involved with substance abuse or another medical condition, and must be before the age of 18.

Toe nail fungus and finger nail fungus is a condition in which fungi get under the nail of the toe or finger and cause an infection in the area. The infection can be of the nail itself or for the underlying skin in the area known as the nail bed. The condition is one in which you will want to have treated, especially if you find that it is painful or embarrassing to have. If you suffer for other conditions, such as diabetes, your doctor may want to take care of the problem as soon as possible so that it does not cause further damage to your skin. While you can have finger nail fungus, it is most commonly a toe nail fungus that will be present. In fact, at any given time, up to 18% of the population will have nail fungus infections.

Nail fungus does not necessary have to be treated. If it is not causing you any pain and you do not have a problem with the way it looks, then you may choose to not treat it at all. But, if you do this, you are increasing the chances for it to spread and worsen which may result in pain. It is also likely that it will take longer to treat at that point. The good news is, though, that you do not need to live with this condition. Nail fungus cures are available to help you.

There are several over the counter medications that can help in this condition. There is not a 100% nail fungus cure, but many people do find relief from these topical treatments. If you do not see any relief from them, you can and should contact your family doctor. He can prescribe medications that are stronger to help. Some of these medications do have side effects though. Toe nail fungus and finger nail fungus is something that many people have, yet you do not need to suffer from it when you seek out the help of fungal treatments such as these.

Excessive use of salt puts extra burden on the kidneys, may cause high blood pressure, which is closely linked with diabetes. Excessive intake of salt promotes water retention in the body, which in due course may lead to obesity, which is a potent cause of diabetes.

White Flour

Wheat is the most common cereal used throughout the world for making bread. It is a good source of energy. With its essential coating of bran, vitamins and minerals, it is an excellent health-building food.

Wheat is usually ground into flour for use as food. However refined wheat flour constitutes a serious health hazard of the various processed foods being used today for their delicious taste, white flour (maida) is especially harmful. The colossal loss of vitamins and mineral in refined wheat flour has led to widespread prevalence of constipation and other related disgestine disturbance and nutritional disorders, particularly diabetes. The consumption of white flour is thus an important contributory cause of diabetes, and its aggravation, if the disease has already developed.

White Salt

Common salt or sodium chloride is a major factor in maintaining the acid base equilibrium of the body. It is also essential for the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Thus, while a certain amount of salt essential for the body system, it is required in very small quantities, ranging from 10 to 15 g per day.

Excessive use of salt puts extra burden on the kidneys, may cause high blood pressure, which is closely linked with diabetes. Excessive intake of salt promotes water retention in the body, which in due course may lead to obesity, which is a potent cause of diabetes. Too much salt is thus harmful and may promote or hasten the onset of diabetes.

Salt (sodium chloride) and sodium preservatives are added to most processed foods. A sodium-controlled diet must avoid or limit salted snacks; pickles and many others processed convenience foods.

Tea and Coffee

Drinking tea and coffee is a serious health hazard for the diabetic. The most alkaloid principle in both tea and coffee is caffeine. Caffeine is an addictive drug similar to cocaine in as much as it stimulates the central nervous system. While these effects are short-lived, it has been observed that they lead to withdrawal symptoms of irritability, lethargy, headaches and anxiety. The daily intake of tea and coffee causes indigestion and gas formation, diarrhea, and constipation. They also increase the blood sugar level, which may lead to diabetes or aggravate its symptoms where the disease is already present.

AIDS. The very sound of the word scares some, and makes other cringe. How did we let it get so far? There is no cure for very few diseases, and aids is one of them. Yet we still have unprotected sex, and we still share dirty needles. Come on! Granted, HIV/AIDS will never be a thing of the past, but we can do better in making the condition less common.

HIV/AIDS kills. In 2004, it was responsible for 3.5 million deaths globally. Thats not even the worst of it. 6.4 million people newly contracted the virus in the same year! Instead of diminishing the deadly condition, we are multiplying it. This needs to stop. It’s as if 3.5 million wasn’t enough dead in 2004, so we decided to boost the numbers for 2005. What are we thinking?!

Mothers can share AIDS with their infants during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, and there is no way to stop it short of not becoming pregnant. But here is the list of preventable HIV/AIDS transmissions:
– Penetrative oral, vaginal, or anal sex (Unprotected)
– Blood transfusion
– In health care settings
– Drug injection

So if these ways are all preventable, why is HIV/AIDS still such a major problem?

The human race needs to wise up, stop sharing needles, screen blood transfusions, and USE CONDOMS. Let’s beat AIDS before it beats us.
